CALL: Ornamisms (2022 - 2023)
For our new project Ornamisms, we invite you to participate with photos of jewellery worn on the body. These can be any type of jewellery that you make or own, whether art, design, fashion, antique, fine, popular culture or other, from ancient to contemporary, worldwide. These photos of jewellery will contribute to the project by training a machine learning algorithm.
Through participatory projects and by ‘working-with’ (Ron Wakkary) self-learning algorithms, we aim to explore machine learning as co-creator in jewellery practice.
These experiments, in which we try to connect with hundreds of makers and their works, are meant to critically question human-centred design, materiality, value, or authorship.
By embodying transformative technologies such as A.I. in collective creation and presentation processes, new types or acts of adornment and more-than-human craft practices can emerge within the phygital realm.
All submitted photos (input) as well as a selection of the generated images (output) will be published on the Artificial Intelligems website and through other presentation formats such as exhibitions and publications within the context of the research project.
Please note: Artificial Inelligems will crop the photos into images of 1024 x 1024 pixels, showing the jewellery, worn on a human body, in close-up. By focusing on the jewellery and the skin of the wearer, the aim is to create images of Ornamisms in which jewellery and body (e)merge into a new hybrid creature. Please take these dimensions into account when making or selecting photos for this project.
! Working with A.I. in artistic practice raises many urgent questions. Have a look at this page to discover how we deal with, and in fact aim to explore, these issues through our participatory projects.
